My Blog

Screenshots of our day project on type spec. We had to create a document in InDesign, and create specifications of it. We then had to take another type spec of someone else’s document and create the same version. It was hard to do at first and was tempting to keep asking where different things sit on the page. However, it made me more aware of the different options in InDesign and how you use these features to create a document.

My evaluation for the project.

Some more of my photos used for the design that I forgot to put here. I decided to use coffee beans as speech marks for the quotes and the texture as the background of my font cover.

My type spec for this editorial design. The leading of PT Sans is actually 5, sorry for the mistake!

Some screenshots of my final design. I am pleased with how it turned out, although I felt tight for time at the end to get it all done as best as I could. I think I would make some changes if I had more time but for a first attempt at creating a book, I am glad at the skills I have learnt and definitely in InDesign as that took me quite a long time to get right. I would like to do this again if I could but there are some things I know now that I can take on and make my next projects even better.

Front and back cover of the magazine. It took me a while to get the lighting right on the coffee bean photo, and also the textured background but I think it turned out OK. Originally I had his name on the front too, but I decided to take that off.

Another two spreads I did for the mock up, and I decided to change some things here too. I did change the body text font to PT Sans and I took the quotes out of the photo and placed it above instead.

Here was one spread of the mock up design I did for my editorial and I think it turned out OK, although in the end I got rid of the ‘Now we are talking to:’ and the photo of him. I made the text smaller as I wanted to emphasise on the Oded Ezer type and I needed to make the format bigger. I decided to make it bigger to fit the interview better and give more space and pace to the piece, with more pages. I also swapped the side the photo was originally on and put it to the left so the mug stood out to the reader, rather than to the right.

3rd Font

Here was the 3rd font I decided to use for the body text called PT Sans. This was a simple sans serif font so it easy to read and it gave me more to play around with.

2nd Font

Here was the font I decided to use as I liked the style and gave some quirkiness to the piece. I originally was going to use this for the whole book but in the critique I was suggested to use a different font for the body text.
